Record number of students seek bike hire at University of Sussex

8th October 2015

Immediate release

Record number of students seek bike hire at University of Sussex

Just two weeks since the beginning of term, over 80 students requested to hire bikes from RE:CYCLE Sussex Bike Co-Op, the student run bike collective based on Falmer campus. Over the weekend, over 25 students collected their bikes from trained student mechanics, and report being very happy with their new bikes, provided by the student co-operative.

New members of our co-op who have hired bikes include students from Singapore, Japan, India, Germany, Sweden, America, Italy, with a mixture of postgraduates and undergraduates. The students hired the bikes from RE:CYCLE Sussex Bike Co-Op, founded in 2013 by six Sussex students, including our current Activities Officer, Lyndsay Burtonshaw. “I am so happy to see how RE:CYCLE has grown over the past 2 years of operation, and how many people’s lives have been transformed by cycling.”

“Only last week I was speaking to Izzy, a student who was going to have to choose between her essential work shift in town, and her favourite module’s lecture – and now because cycling is cheaper and quicker, she can do both.”

The bike co-op aims to provide students with a cheaper and more sustainable mean of transport to get to university and around town. In the last few months, students had been busy collecting abandoned bikes from campus, receiving donating bikes from graduating students, and with mechanic Paola, fixing them back in tiptop shape.

Cosmo Lo, communications officer of RE:CYCLE said, “I am very happy to see more students are cycling, especially the freshers have taken their bikes with them when they moved in earlier. I joined the coop last year when I hired a bike with RE:CYCLE, and since then, I have met a lot of friends and passionate cyclists. As an international student, it has helped me a lot settling in Brighton.”

Everyone is welcome to our open meeting for food, games and democratic decisions, in the ground floor of Fulton building of University of Sussex on Monday 12th October, 6pm.

RE:CYCLE Sussex Bike Co-op is going to celebrate our 2nd birthday this year! Come say hi at the Freshers’ Fair – We are a team of students who run a cooperative – mainly because we love bikes. We want to reduce emissions, landfill waste, the bus company’s transport monopoly, stimulate self-sufficiency, co-operation, healthy living, safe cycling infrastructure, and most of all spread the joy of cycling!

We bring bicycles abandoned on our campus back in tiptop shape to hire our to Sussex students for a friendly price on a termly basis. With working teams for Communications, Finance & Freewheelers Bike Mechanics, and Social & Community, we have a buddy system so new people can come and learn how things work and help out straight away.

We have lots of socials, regularly make bike smoothies, bike themed parties, building bike soundsystems, roller racing, and going on bike rides, even as far as London! Anyone is welcome at RE:CYCLE.

Bikey love, peace and grease,

The Co-op Committee, 2014-15
